Sustainability

Magic Bus defines sustainability as a transference from dependence to interdependence. We are focused on social and economic sustainability and are striving to build a model whereby programme recipients create the demand for programmes in multiple locations in India and beyond.

Social Sustainability

The key to the future growth of Magic Bus is its ability to be sustainable within the communities it works. A socially sustainable community must have the ability to maintain and build its own resources and have the resiliency to prevent and address problems in the future. The Magic Bus programme increasingly involves the youth of each community as peer leaders to younger children in order to inculcate a sustainable culture.

We recognise and build on two types of community sustainability. The first, individual sustainability, is our immediate focus.

‘Individual sustainability’ refers to the attributes and resources that our children can contribute to their own well being as well as that of the community as a whole. We focus on building such resources as education, health, life skills and leadership. The second is community sustainability.
'Community Sustainability'  is a more collective process that involves the building of social networks and relationships that facilitate positive change within the community.

Financial Sustainability

Magic Bus believes that eventually its programme should not be grant dependent and that both the organisation, and its communities should be empowered to raise their own funds to sustain the programme.

Magic Bus is currently developing a number of social businesses, closely linked to the organisation’s vision and goals, that will provide the organisation with regular, earned income.
