Outdoor Learning
Outdoor activities offer
an opportunity to add an element of fun, exhilaration and adventure
to the learning programme.
Magic Bus uses both residential and day programmes
for its development
learning in the outdoors.
A typical programme consists of forty children, one mentor,
three youth mentors, two NGO staff members, five corporate volunteers.
This team is taken to
campsites to participate in three days
of intensive fun
and learning or one-day programmes in carefully
selected environments.
The activities often focus on physical tasks which
present the participants with a variety of challenging situations
and problems which are difficult to achieve in the classroom. The
activities themselves may be based around rock climbing, canoeing,
the ropes course, etc. or simply tasks to be completed outdoors but which demand the
application of skills of teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, decision making and communication.
The specific aims of Magic Bus outdoor development programmes vary, but most are geared towards
individual and group objectives such as self-esteem, self-awareness, stress management, communication,
creative problem solving and collaborative learning.
