CAREER OPPORTUNITY AT MAGIC BUS

Magic Bus is a 9-year old not-for-profit organization in Mumbai working through the medium of sport and experiential learning to improve the personal and social skills of at risk children and youth. The organization is at an exciting stage in its growth and is exploring opportunities in partnership with UNICEF to scale its programme across India. The organization has won a number of global awards and is now in need of a carefully managed communication strategy to grow and protect the organization’s reputation as it expands in reach and in the diversity of its revenue generation streams. The organization is also registered in the UK for fundraising and awareness building purposes and has started raising funds in Dubai.

Magic Bus is now looking for a dynamic, hard working manager to be responsible for communicating the Magic Bus mission and vision to all our stakeholders and for building and protecting the brand of the organization. He or she will join the sustainability team and work closely with the partnerships manager to create highly powerful and inspiring communication material to support the organization in its mission to advocate and protect the child’s right to learn through play, influence systemic change in the Indian education system and elicit funds and revenue to sustain the organization in its growth and vision to reach out to thousands of children across India through its sport for development curriculum.

Magic Bus is looking for a talented communication’s expert with a Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, marketing, public relations or journalism. We need someone with 5 to 7 years of professional experience, a proven track record of developing and implementing strategic communication plans in a team-oriented environment, and excellent oral and written communication skills. KEY RESULT AREAS

External Communication

  • Create together with the head of department and COO a 5-year communication strategy in line with the organisation’s goals.
  • Implement the communications strategy for the organization, supporting all departments and organizational functions giving inputs to the creation of, for example, press releases, advocacy campaigns, fundraising proposals, marketing material, business plans, new media communication, published curricula, programme documents etc.
  • Ensure brand guidelines are followed and protect the brand through monitoring of partner usage and any misuse.

Product Development

  • Support the partnerships department with the creation of innovative marketing strategies that can impact revenue generation (both voluntary donations and ‘trading’ activities). Magic Bus has a number of traditional fundraising partnerships, alongside social enterprise models that generate funding through business models.
  • Manage and create content for all communication tools and liaise closely with outsourced professionals such as web designers and PR agencies where required.

Advocacy

  • Ensure that all communication strategies include key advocacy messages with a view to influencing policy level change. Support such messages with research and liaison with the programme team and experts in the development sector.
  • Build relationships with key journalists and publications to ensure that Magic Bus is widely covered in relevant journals and projected at relevant platforms by promoting key Magic Bus team members as thought leaders in the field of child’s rights and sport for development.

Relationship Management

  • Appoint and manage a Project Manager to design the database strategy for Magic Bus using our new online client relationship management system. Manage the ongoing strategy for ensuring best practice in the use of mass mailings through the database.

Finance / Administration

  • Accurately prepare the yearly budgets for the communications department and ensure a cost effective strategy is implemented.
  • Create a monitoring and evaluation tool to track and monitor the communication department’s outputs and review and improve the strategy.
  • To liaise with the M&E department and finance department and analyze MIS in order to improve communication material and strategies.

Human Resources

  • Manage a small team, outsourced experts and be actively involved in inducting new employees as and when required, including the mentorship of a community peer leader in the department.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Some basic experience and a proven understanding of marketing
  • Proven superior writing and editing skills with extensive knowledge of grammar, spelling and punctuation
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information and compose clear and persuasive prose
  • Proficiency in computing applications, including e-mail, Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet navigation tools
  • Demonstrated ability to balance long and short term projects in a fast-paced, High-performance environment, leaving room for urgent projects
  • Effective listening skills
  • An in depth knowledge of the social sector is not necessary but a proven understanding and sensitivity to the sector desirable.

The Communications Manager will report to the head of department who in turn reports to the COO. You will appoint an assistant after your first 2-3 months and outsource various skilled requirements including web design and PR etc.

Tenure - Full time position.

Remuneration - Salary will be best in industry. Offers will commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.
